The daily struggle. Awkwardly folding yourself into to the back seat of your car to try and lift your ever growing little one into their seat only to then have to hold the position while you continue to fiddle with the buckle for 10 minutes. Well, your back can heave a sigh of relief, as car manufacturers seem to have solved this problem, all while allowing for extended rear facing too!
A number of manufacturers have introduced a 360 degree rotation feature, which allows for extended rear facing, forward facing and (the clever bit) a stop in between, so you can face the seat towards the door, making it a whole lot easier to get your little one in and out of the car.
These innovative car seats feature mechanisms that make it simple for you to rotate to any position you choose, most of them allow you to spin with just one hand and a simple button or lever motion.
So with the two most important issues solved, safety and simplicity, how do you choose which of these seats is best for you? We've assessed the leading swivel car seats to weigh up the pros and cons, so it's easier for you to make an informed decision.
We've chosen what we think are the safest seats on the market. They're all i-Size compliant, and offer rear-facing to at least 2 years or in most cases up to 4 or 105cm.
Like the Dualfix, the Britax-Romer Dualfix M i-Size is also approved to the latest R129 i-Size safety standards so with both car seats you can be assured of maximum protection for your little one with these two seats.
The Dualfix M i-Size also boasts Extended Rear Facing travel and can be rotated a full 360 degrees to make getting your little one in and out of the car simple. It also features the Britax-Romer patented Pivot Link ISOFIX system that directs the force of a collision downward and then more gently forward, with the result of greatly reducing the risk of head and neck injury to your child.
The Dualfix M i-Size features multiple recline positions meaning you can keep your little one comfortable whether they are sat up or lay flat for a nap. Alongside this, the adjustable rebound bar not only prevents the car seat from tilting in the event of impact but can also be adjusted by a full 8 degrees to match the backrest of the vehicle seat and give your child an additional 10% of leg space.
The Cloud Z i-Size is a rear-facing infant carrier seat that's suitable from birth up to approximately 12 months, and the 180 degree rotation makes for easy access to both the seat and your baby for seamless loading and unloading.
The seat can be installed using your car's 3-point seat belt, however as with all swivel car seats, the rotation function can only be achieved when attached to an ISOFIX base, in this case the Base Z.
The Cloud Z i-Size can be reclined to a near flat position, which allows baby to remain in their seat comfortably and safely for longer, which is great if you plan on using your Cloud Z as part of a travel system. It also means your little one can sleep comfortably when on the road or out and about.
The Cybex Cloud Z comes with a Linear Side-Impact Protection system which protects your baby in the event of a side-impact collision. This Safety feature is also teamed with an energy-absorbing shell which can help reduce side-impact force by as much as 25%.
The Sirona Z i-Size is designed with longevity in mind, and is suitable from birth up to 4 years. The 360 rotation feature when used with the Base Z means transitioning from rear to forward-facing can happen at the click of a switch, so there's no need to re-install your car seat when the times comes. There is also a stop at the door for quick and easy loading and unloading, and magnetic harness holders to keep everything out of the way during the process.
As with the Cloud Z, the Sirona Z i-Size features the same Linear Side-Impact Protection system and an energy absorbing shell for protection in the event of a side-on collision, and because this seat can be used forward-facing, the Sirona Z also features Energy Reduction Technology. ER-Tech protects your little one's neck should you find yourself involved in a head-on collision while your little passenger is forward facing, and reduces the amount of force to their head and neck by more than 20%.
Another great safety feature is the Driving Direction Control. The Sirona Z is an extended rear-facing car seat, and is designed to be used rear-facing for as long as possible.
The Maxi Cosi Pebble 360 has been thoughtfully crafted with comfort and convenience in mind. With a new ergonomic carrying handle, an Easy-In harness (which holds the harness out of the way of the seat, enabling you to place your little one in the seat without becoming tangled in the straps), an adjustable headrest and snug newborn inlay (from 40-60cm) to keep them cosy from birth onwards, this car seat caters to both parent and baby.
The Pebble 360 is suitable from birth until 83cm (approx. 15 months) which is a little longer than most infant carriers which usually reach their capacity at 75cm. The Pebble 360 can be installed using your car's seat belts, or for added ISOFIX protection, you can purchase the compatible Maxi Cosi FamilyFix 360 Isofix base (you will need this to utilise this seat's swivel capabilities). The Pebble 360 boasts i-Size safety regardless of whichever installation method you choose, in addition to padded G Cell Side Impact Protection, so you can rest assured that your baby is in safe hands.
From day one, the Joie i-Spin Grow will furnish your child in luxury, with plush padding and a super-soft grow-with-me infant insert which comes with 4 pieces to ensure a snug, custom fit, providing ergonomic support as your little one develops. The 360 rotation handle is placed right where you would naturally reach, making what would usually be a fumble, effortless.
Where safety is concerned, the Joie i-Spin Grow has everything you could possibly want. Not only is it i-Size safe, conforming to the latest R129 safety standards, the i-Spin Grow in Oyster also offers ISOFIX safety, in addition to Side Impact Protection wings and a top tether for that extra peace of mind. The ISOFIX installation is simple and fool-proof, with VeriFitTM install technology which provides audio and visual feedback to guarantee correct installation every time, so you never need worry about human error compromising your child's safety.
The i-Spin Grow also enables extended rear-facing for your child, so they can benefit from the additional safety this provides. The headrest boasts Tri-Protect TM technology, giving your child a further layer of safety and is crafted from Energy Absorbing memory foam, lending your child not only comfort, but protection in case of a collision.
If you're still unsure whether you want to take the leap into the world of rotating car seats then there are plenty of other safety-enhancing and time-saving features to help you get the most out of your child's car seat. For example, Axkid One is an extended rear-facing car seat with a sliding rails system, designed to give your little one extra leg room, while making it easier to get them in and out.
